PMP® — Project Management Professional

PMI's flagship credential for project leaders.

The Project Management Professional (PMP)® is the world's most recognized certification for project managers. It validates leadership across predictive, agile, and hybrid approaches — the way projects actually run in modern organizations.

PMP is organised around three performance domains — People, Process, and Business Environment — with 35 tasks and dozens of enablers. Rather than testing memorisation, the exam poses situational scenarios: what would you do next, which stakeholder do you engage first, when do you escalate.

This guide is the free, open reference we use with our own students. Read as much or as little as you need. When you're ready to test yourself, the free 12-question diagnostic will tell you where you stand on each domain in about eight minutes.

FAQ

Common PMP® questions

How hard is the PMP exam?

The PMP tests situational judgement rather than memorisation. About half of first-time candidates without structured preparation fail. Students who follow a full study plan pass on the first attempt at a much higher rate.

How long does it take to prepare?

Most candidates need 60 to 120 hours of focused study over 6 to 12 weeks.

Do I need PMI membership?

No, but membership reduces the exam fee (member $405 vs non-member $555) and gives free access to the PMBOK® Guide.

Is a mentor worth it?

A mentor helps most when your diagnostic shows large gaps in People or Business Environment, or when you have less than four weeks to your exam.
